Why the name "The 4th Man In The Car"?
We’re glad you asked!
The name “The 4th Man In The Car” comes from a powerful part of Clark’s story. On the night of the accident there were two other teens in the car with Clark as the driver. We are grateful to God that the other boys did not sustain life-threatening injuries. So it became common knowledge, through news accounts and personal stories, that there were three in the car that night.
During the time that Clark was unconscious in ICU, the hospital allowed us, as parents, to stay almost continuously. So we hardly left his room for the first week. One evening I (Clark’s Dad) decided to take a break and walk. As I went through the ICU waiting area, I heard a pay phone ringing. Usually I ignored it because I didn’t want to waste time I could be spending with Clark. But this one evening I decided I would be a good citizen and answer it, yell for some family that probably wasn’t there and then politely hang it back up. To my amazement the voice on the other end said, “I’m trying to reach the Menshouse family”. I told the woman who I was and then she began to share with me why she had called. Her husband operated the towing service that was called to remove the car from the crash site (what was left of it). She told me that she was a Christian and that she had been praying for Clark since the time the call came in, which by that time had been several days. I thanked her and expected to update her on his condition and hang up. But then she told me that she had a message for us – from God. She said “I’m to tell you that just as there was a fourth man in the fiery furnace with Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nigo (in the Bible, Daniel chapter 3- many Bible scholars believe it was actually Jesus in the furnace appearing in the Old Testament), so there was a fourth man in the car with the boys that night. He was protecting the other two boys and your son”. I thanked her for her kind words of encouragement and she interrupted me and said, “you don’t understand. This isn’t from me. God spoke to me and told me to call you and tell you this!”
I could never express in words how much strength this gave us. God had moved the heart of someone we had never met to give us a message about our crisis. It confirmed that He loved us and that He was in control. Even more it reminded us that He loves Clark and was there with him from the very first moment. It was going to be alright. God had said so.
So this site is not dedicated to displaying the trauma, pain and challenges of Clark Menshouse. This site is dedicated to showing and telling the message of the fourth man in the car, to Jesus Christ who brought forth a miracle before our very eyes – and now before yours.
